I'm still not sure why anyone would imply you need the CDT to do this, when all you have to do is do some changes to the NSL API and then retrieve the badges on the NSL mod (which is already done partly for admins/refs) and you're about done.

I'm clueless about any of this stuff so someone tell me;
Can we make this happen? Who can make this happen? Whats the implications/limitations of this, if any?

Even if it was too messy to apply it to every division because of div 1 having 20 teams ect, this could be used as an incentive for participation in another rookie tournament or even a differently formatted event...

Theoretically yes, you could make this happen. But the current NSL server which depends on Jiriki, no one else is already kind of laggy as you may have noticed. It works well with referees and admins through the NSL mod because that's only a few players and yet, it causes issues already. Doing so for divisions winners would only increase those technical problems. At least, that is what Dragon told me when I mentioned it months ago. So we dropped that idea.

Maybe another server could fix it and then, you'll be able to show badges on NSL modded servers, better than nothing, that is true. However, it's up to Jiriki to approve this or not. As Zefram stated on the other thread, Jiriki didn't want to switch for another provider even if it was for free. Probably because a lot of stuff does depend of this server, stuff not related to NSL directly and also that Jiriki can control everything from his side right now, which wouldn't be the case in the other hand I assume.

That's a shame because that would be the cheapest way to reward players, beside the Hall of Fame that nobody cares of anyway. And believe me, I've thought about many ways to reach that purpose, and I failed at finding good stuff for rewarding NSL players.

This is super easy to implement cheaply and reliably

If it's just a static list of winners, it's a no brainer - just upload to a cdn and point a dns record to it. E.g. champions.ensl.org

For such a tiny file, you can put it on S3 and you'd have a hard time breaking $1 a month. You'd need to make around 2 million requests in a month

Here's a hasty 5 minute demo of what I mean:

https://ensl.s3-eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/ensl_champions.json

How does that sound?

To be honest i wonder on where you wanna showoff these badges since the CDT will not approve this stuff.

I mean you only got 2 Ways

1) adding it into the Comp mod to have it at least at some public servers to show off.

2) adding it into the NSL mode then only @PCW/Gather/ Matches people see it.

(even if you chose 1 some may dislike it and cut that out @comp mod)

If they are ever implemented I think rewarding winners of each division is a bad idea because of seedings.
They are a horror now and what would they be if every team tried to get seeded Div lower.

Badge for Top division or Top2 is the way to go.

I was gonna say the same. We already get a request for every player, adding if he got a badge is nothing big. We can either host the images somewhere or even put them in the mod directly.

... I said all you needed to do was update the user API to return a 'badge' and provide me with the images for inclusion in the NSL mod. The 'hard' part was that someone needs to maintain the data that ties badges to players.. and since refs and other stuff is hardly ever correct, it doesn't seem like even that gets done.

As for the badges being visible on ALL servers even vanilla ones, why is that such a big deal??? You are just playing a niche game competitively, its not like some WORLD CUP OMG ACHIEVEMENT that everyone needs to kiss your feet about.

So what to do with past winners, or is it only for the current ones until the next season ends? If everyone had the badge, no one would be special. I don't think this idea is good in practice and I am totally fine with Hall of Fame only.

I don't like the idei of adding badges only for winners. In fact this is kind of supporting NSL from CDT (if they agree to implement that). Every ns2 player will come to know what is NSL and maybe a lot of them will go play NSL events. But again, I don't like the idea to adding badges only for winners. I think it will be reasonable to add a badge for every player which participated at least in 4 or 5 NSL contests (season/draft/custom-map-cup).
For example you can create a special NSL badge (which differ from NSL-ref and NSL-admin badges) and make a three variations of this badge (gold, silver and bronze), then give this badges to the top-3 div players (now it's div1, div2 and div3). Otherwise, badges presentation won't be so justly (as ySo noticed).

And then a problem of inactive players will arise. So, only active players of a certain team deserve a badge. Referee and admins must take control at this question. I guess only the players that participated at least in 5 last contest matches can be considered as active.

And I don't think CDT will agree with that :)

Just to clear things; those offers from Zefram came during my leadership as HeadAdmin. It was me who refused it, less so Jiriki (although he wouldn't be comfy with that either), so don't blame false people. If I had talked Jiriki into it, he'd probably had given up the domain.

Since my time is done I can freely give you my reasonings and advice. Just for some maybe-little-benefit it seemed widely unwise to me to leave the main domain and server of ENSL with its 10 year history to a person I wouldn't be 100% sure would maintain the same neutral dedication as Jiriki has done over all these years. Jiriki is basically your free NS bitch even if he doesn't play NS2. He would rather burn his hands than do bullshit or put personal agenda on the servers. And if he feels some current admins would turn ENSL into complete shit, he will probably intervene. Don't risk losing that safety net unless absolutely necessary.

Don't get me wrong; I highly appreciated all of Zefram's work and he put so much effort into the league (that's why I felt I could resign with a good feeling having him as next HeadAdmin), but I didn't know him personally well enough to put the whole ENSL legacy on the line. Simple truth, we're still in the internet.

Jiriki

Jiriki does seem like an absolute legend and unfortunately taken for granted by the community (myself included). I don't even know the bloke.
